Hypothermia ~ The Philippine Mountaineering

Prevent the Risk of Hypothermia

Hypothermia is a condition in which core temperature drops below the required temperature for normal metabolism and body functions which is defined as 35.0 °C (95.0 °F). Hypothermia is the opposite of Hyperthermia. This potentially life-threatening condition is common among mountaineers, especially those who are not familiar with its early warning signs. As body temperature decreases, characteristic symptoms occur such as shivering and mental confusion.
Hypothermia is prone to us mountaineers because of the micro weather pattern of the mountains we climb. The common reason of experiencing this mountain sickness is due to our prolong exposure to water like rain drops.  The second reason is the wind that plays a role in the loss of body heat. Hypothermia is dangerous because it develops subtly, often without the individual's knowledge.

Hypothermia is a preventable situation in mountaineering experience. These are the ways to prevent Hypothermia:
1. Stay warm, dry and well hydrated during the climb.

2. Consume warm food and beverages.

3. Start the trek at a high level of physical conditioning. Your body will benefit from its heightened ability to circulate blood efficiently.

4. Use the proper clothing during rainy season.

6. Set up your shelter immediately before the rain comes.

7. Remove wet clothing; replace it with warm items, including a head cover.

We pray that as the rainy season starts, all of us will enjoy mountaineering without any record of being a hypothermia victim.
