Earth Day 2012 ~ The Philippine Mountaineering

Earth Day 2012

Today the entire world is celebrating the annual worldwide event with the intention of increasing the awareness and appreciation of the Earth's natural environment. Today is the fourth day of the United Nations' designated International Mother Earth Day. Since April 22, 2009, Earth Day was celebrated by more than 175 countries around the globe. Earth Day was first held in US through the initiative of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. This initiative was the by-product of 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

The Philippines is said to be the country blessed by the LORD of diverse natural resources and environment. Sad to say the opposite of the blessing is the mismanagement and selfish acts of few. As of now the country's environment is in near-death situation. The celebration of Earth Day in the Philippines was started in the mid of 1980s wherein individuals gathered to celebrated the said event. The mother of our current President signed last April 16, 1990 the Proclamation No. 553, mandating the date of April 22 as Earth Day Celebration in our country.

As the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day is celebrating today, millions of people around the world are frustrated with the failure of governments to take any steps toward protecting and preserving the environment. The Philippines suffers environmental problems including loss of agricultural lands, deforestation, soil erosion, air and water pollution, improper disposal of solid and toxic wastes, loss of coral reefs, mismanagement and abuse of coastal resources, and over-fishing.

The 2012 celebration of Earth Day is designed to provide people with the opportunity to unite their voices in a call for a sustainable future and direct them toward quantifiable outcomes, using vehicles such as petitions, the Billion Acts of Green; campaign, and events.

Earth Day 2012 will act as a launch pad for growing the environmental movement and will put forth a bold declaration demanding immediate action to secure Renewable Energy for All and a sustainable future for our planet. The movement will be comprised of individuals of every age from all corners of the Earth, and will call upon local, national, and international leaders to put an end to fossil fuel subsidies, embrace renewable energy technology, improve energy efficiency, and make energy universally accessible.

We, the mountaineering community must be one of the prime stake holders of this activity. If the current situation of deforestation, kaingin, illegal logging and rampant mining will continue, we will suffer. The mountains of our country are in need of our protection, we have to act. We have to be part of this environmental battle. Let us all demand and prepare sustainable future not only for the future mountaineers but most especially for our generation.

As mountaineers we have to live in an earth-friendly life style. Let us avoid any acts that will contribute to the amount of waste. As mountaineers, we are expected to live the three R's of the environment: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reducing the amount of waste you produce is the best way to help the environment. Avoid practicing disposables but observe the Reuse- instead of throwing things away, try to find ways to use them again. Lastly, do the idea of Recycle- creating new products out of the materials from the old ones.

The mountaineers are one of the vanguards of the environment, let us condemn and correct any acts of environmental crimes. Let us not support the massive use of fossil fuel; we can practice our love in walking even in the urban than using car or use bicycle instead. Let us call the attention of the government to invest in renewable energy technology. Let us continue our love to the Mother Earth by being part of the reforestation programs. As a recommendation, look for a mountain to be adopted for possible tree planting activity than going for massive climbing for Guinness book record holding.  There lots of mountaineering clubs and organizations right now that are enjoying tree planting. It is also shameful for us if we will promote and support any act of wildlife trade.

Our dear mountaineers and lovers of GOD's creation, let us be inspired with Psalm 33:5-6, saying, "GOD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. By the word of the LORD the heavens were made and their entire host by the breath of His mouth."
