Importance of Wearing Sunglasses

The Seven Known Importance of Wearing Sunglasses

Sunglasses is one of the neglected mountaineering accessories. For some this is just a piece for "porma" or fashion. On this post, we aim to influence you to consider wearing sunglasses as means protecting your eyes from any eminent damage when being engaged in any outdoor activities.

It’s generally a good idea to wear sunglasses anytime you’re outdoors but especially when:
At the beach or near the water (one of the most reflective surfaces).
You’re in the mountains or outside at any high elevations.

These are some of the common reasons of wearing Sunglasses:

1. To Protect Eyes from Harmful UV Rays
One of the advantages and disadvantages of mountaineering in the Philippines is being exposed directly to the sun. Sun's   Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is considered as the reason of various eye illnesses like cataract and benign growths in the eyes.

2. To Protect You from Skin Cancer
Sunglasses can also help to prevent cancer of the eyelids and wrinkles by protecting the delicate skin around the eyes from premature aging. Wearing wide-brimmed hats and caps might be use also to experience more UV protection while in the wild.

3. To Reduce Glare
Water, rocks and other surfaces can reflect brightly which could be irritating to our vision. You must use sunglasses with polarized filter if you are going to a glare area for your comfort.

4. To Protect Your Eyes from Wind
While trekking or just by just enjoying the view, our eyes can be dry due to wind blows. One of the uncommon attribute of sunglasses is to keep our eyes moisturized.  Sunglasses are an effective wind shield to keep our eyes moist for our comfort by reducing the rate of evaporation of tears. If you are wearing contact lenses, sunglasses will help to keep them moist and prevent windblown particles from getting in your eyes and causing any corneal abrasion.

5. To Protect Your Eyes from Irritants
While on the outdoors, our eyes are prone to irritants like dust and debris. These small aliens could be reason for any delays. For more protection, consider a close-fitting “wrap” style frames for more effective barrier.

6. To Reduce or Prevent from Headaches
The summer condition of our country can cause the pupil of the eye, which controls the amount of light reaching the light sensitive retina, constrict small enough to reduce light to a comfortable vision. The said condition could be a reason for us to be squint. Squinting and constant constriction of the pupil can lead to headache and eyestrain. The use of sunglasses reduces the amount of light reaching the eyes to a more comfortable level and eliminates the need for squinting and severe pupil constriction.

7. To Enhance Vision
The lenses of sunglasses are tinted to cut down on overall brightness and enhance terrain definition. Remember, while on the wild, any bright or unusual colors may alter your color perception adversely.

As conclusion, wearing sunglasses is a must for every outdoor enthusiast like mountaineer. Wearing sunglasses is not for fashion but for protection. The comfort of wearing expensive sunglasses like Oakley, Bole or Rayban is the same wearing locally recognized brands.
