Tips Before Climbing

Dozen of Things to Consider Before Going for Mountaineering

Mountaineering is a hobby enjoyed by adventurous individuals. Philippines is rich in beautiful, dangerous and enjoying mountains, both touched and untouched by human encumbrance. The blessing of being free from pollution and daily busy schedule of materialistic life are few of our reasons in moving to mountain destinations. The intention of this post is to give tips to consider for successful mountaineering. Mountaineering is more than just climbing high peaks, it is exploring mountains to enjoy a different color of life and knowing the greatness and hugeness of GOD’s creations.

Things to consider for a successful mountaineering experience:

1) Newbie should consider lower mountains first. Don't rush for stiff and huge mountains on your list to climb.

2) Enthusiasm and physical strength can be related in a sense that the amount of fun you will have while climbing will help you generate body strength.

3) Motivation is required to complete the journey, so determine what motivates you.

4) Body resistance differs from person to person, avoid comparing yourself with others.

5) Carry enough fluid supply and keep drinking regularly. This will help you prevent dehydration problems.

6) The problems you face during the climb should be analyzed as to what led you in such situation, note them down. Same mistakes should never be repeated.

7) Meet some of the experienced mountaineers or certified guides. Know about their good and bad experiences. Inquire about the necessary things required.

8) Create the habit of working at a very moderate pace for long periods of time.

9) Learn the basic mountaineering course, climbing ethics, climbing protection, useful climbing knots, basic first aid, basic rope management, and basic wilderness survival.

10) If possible and needed, buy a heart rate monitor to note your heart rate at different altitudes. Consult your doctor or physician and perform exercises that will help you survive in high altitudes.

11) Enjoy at least once a month day hike. Practice makes us ready. Improve your stamina by setting new goals of increasing your work out.

12) Carry a portable music player with you to avoid getting bored and to keep your mind busy instead of collecting worries.

"There have been joys too great to be described in words, and there have been griefs upon which I have not dared to dwell, and with these in mind I say, climb if you will, but remember that courage and strength are naught without prudence, and that a momentary negligence may destroy the happiness of a lifetime. Do nothing in haste, look well to each step, and from the beginning think what may be the end."    — Edward Whymper
