Kibosh Environmental Crimes NOW
One of the trending issues in Let's Unite all the Climbers in the Philippines wall is the reality of vandalism in different mountain destinations. The presence of garbage both biodegradable and non-biodegradable is rampant in mountains with less elevation. The mountains within CALABARZON are suffering from garbage and vandalism due to its accessibility to Metro Manila. The known mountain destinations suffering from vandalism are Maculot, Batulao, Pico de Loro and Romelo (Famy).

Wikipedia defined Vandalism as ruthless destruction or spoiling of anything beautiful or venerable. The term also includes criminal damage such as graffiti and defacement directed towards any property without permission of the owner. As mountaineers it is very disappointing for us every time we see a place with vandals. As I observe the situation, I have the confidence that the act of vandalism is NOT an act of true blooded responsible mountaineers. Vandalism in the mountain destinations are actions of disoriented mountaineers and “piknikers” (those non-mountaineer individuals who climbed and just leave their stuffs within the mountain destination).
Vandalism is the byproduct of individual’s reaction to authorities, expression and form of art and way of expressing their emotions or feelings. Those individuals under the shadow of vandalism forgot the reality that they are not the owners the mountains. They have to realize that mountain is NOT an enemy but friend, that mountain and its natural beauty is the highest form of art and last they forget mountain will some they fight back of every pain we will inflict.
As mountaineers let us not let the crime of vandalism destroy the natural beauty of GOD's creation. Let us continue to stand against massive and any form of environmental destruction. Let us condemn the action of SM Development Corporation of cutting the trees within the green area of Baguio City. Let us stop the effort of every individual and company to destroy the natural beauty by using the word development and industrialization as clothe of their interest. Let us be part of tree planting activities and support the reforestation effort of the government. Let us promote responsible mountaineering. Let the LNT principles be our daily practice.
